Nice article in the Guardian from St Etienne‘s Bob Stanley.
With just one album, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark more or less destroyed their career. And they weren’t the only ones: the early 1980s were littered with commercial suicides. Bob Stanley finds out how it all went wrong

If you want to have a look at what was played & when, or even if you want to create the experience in your own home, the setlist for the last Atomic is now up. Check it out here.
cheers,
Bill
The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that there’s a new poster up (see the thumbnail over to your left a bit). Yes, the next 24 Hour Party People is confirmed for Easter Saturday, 22nd March at the San Francisco Bath House! From 9pm!
Now, with the vagaries of NZ licencing laws and our celebration of Easter, it so happens that the Bath House is the ONLY bar in town able to open past midnight on that Saturday night. No other bar can trade on Easter Sunday (from 12am). So I guess, if you’re out looking for a drink past midnight, I’m gonna see you one way or another!

Cheers,
Bill
From Dead Flowers:
I’m not into VU bootlegs really, but apparently this is a big deal. It’s the ONLY available live stuff from 1967 and has only become available in literally the last two days. Recorded just after the release of The Velvet Underground And Nico and featuring the debut performance of Sister Ray (19 mins long) and the *previously unheard* song I’m Not A Young Man Any More. That’s right, A NEW VELVET UNDERGROUND SONG. And it’s fucking good too. This version of Sister Ray absolutely shreds and is what the Velvet Underground are all about.
I’m just listening now and i can already say that, in addition to the historical importance of these five recordings, this thing rocks like a motherfucker.
True! Download it while you can folks, this is great stuff. Just click the Dead Flowers link above to take you there.
Also reviewed here at Idolator if you aren’t believin’.
Worth it alone to hear Lou yell ‘Sock It To Me’ before each solo!
Here’s the tracklist:
1. I’m Not A Young Man Anymore (previously unheard VU song)
2. Guess I’m Falling In Love
3. I’m Waiting For The Man
4. Run Run Run
5. Sister Ray (debut live performance)

Yes folks, photos from Saturday night’s Atomic are up. Get ’em here!. ‘Twas damn hot but a fantastic night all round despite a few technical glitches. A huge nothingelseon THANK YOU to all of you who came down to the bath house, and if you snagged a CD, I hope you like it!
Cheers! Bill
Freebass, the group consisting of The Smiths’ Andy Rourke, New Order’s Peter Hook and The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Mani, have revealed their new singer.
Gary Briggs, formerly of Cornish-by-Manchester band Haven, will join the trio, alongside a number of celebrity guests.
Speaking to BBC 6Music, Peter Hook said: “We have had trouble getting it together and I have had a lot of trouble finding a vocalist and we now have another one. This is about our 15th one.
Ian Brown, Billy Corgan, Happy Mondays’ Rowetta, Tim Burgess and Liam Gallagher are also involved in the project, reportedly contributing guest vocals.
The group has been in development since 2004, a delay Hook puts down to commitments in the members’ other bands.
He said: “We started it funnily enough, Mani and I, as a reaction because our groups New Order and Primals had been stalled, and then miraculously our groups started up again so it went on the back burner for a long time.
“Rourkie plays guitar a lot, Mani and I balance each other out. He plays low and I play high. It actually works well.
This is making me drool, tho’ I’d have nowhere to put it all!
