2008 begins!

OK, 2008 kicks off with 24 Hour Party People on Saturday the 19th of January at the San Fran Bath House from 9pm, so if you aren’t one of the lucky ones heading to Auckland for the Big Day Out on the 18th, or if you get back nice & early, it’d be lovely to see you!

The poster may look a little familiar – it was originally for the cancelled December gig, but waste not, want not, right?

Cheers,

Bill

Happy New Year!

A Happy New Year to all, and big thanks to all who came down to the Bath House on Monday night for Hang the DJ – it was bloody brilliant! I’ll try & get some photos up soon – haven’t even checked the camera yet, but will get onto it.

24 Hour Party People will be hitting the Bath House real soon – stay tuned!

Cheers,

Bill

24 Hour Party People Cancelled!

Unfortunately I have to cancel this Saturday’s 24 Hour Party People at the San Francisco Bath House. I unexpectedly had to go into hospital last weekend & I won’t be able to make this weekend. Apologies to all of you who were looking forward to it (I’m quite gutted myself!), but things will be OK for New Year’s Eve – more details of NYE soon.

My list is BIGGER than your list!

You know how magazines & newspapers always seem to be printing lists of the best <genre> albums ever, or 100 albums you must hear before you do <activity X>? Well, the Guardian’s obviously trying to be the Daddy of ’em all, as it has compiled 1000 albums you should listen to before you shuffle off your mortal coil.

…the Guardian’s music team – after much debate, some of it bitter – suggest 1000 albums that are well worth your hearing. What it’s not is the best 1000 albums of all time. Instead, it’s a cross-genre, cross-era look at some great music.

So what were the rules for picking the 1000?

First, no single act can appear more than once – though where an artist has collaborated widely, they might pop up all over the place, as Brian Eno and Damon Albarn do.

Second, where there was a good alternative to the blindingly obvious album, we went for the alternative. After all, who needs to be told, yet again, to buy Revolver or Pet Sounds?

Third, we’re happy to have a slew of Various Artists albums, because there are plenty of underground scenes whose best songs came in the form of singles – why buy a Standells album when you can hear the great Nuggets compilation?

Fourth, there are a ton of little-known personal favourites in here. So when you stumble over a title you’ve never heard of, it’s because at least one of our writers desperately wants you to hear it.

Full story (and list) here, and you can argue to your heart’s content in the blog here!

Have at it!

Control radio

To celebrate the release of Control, the Ian Curtis biopic (it’s just out in the States now too, y’know!) Viva Radio (aided & abetted by the most excellent Dan Selzer of Acute Records) have put together a 7 part radio special for your listening pleasure.

Including large chunks of the Factory Records catalogue, lots of Joy Division & New Order, interviews with Jon Savage & Simon Reynolds, and a bunch of vintage post-punk from Joy Division’s peers & followers (including our own Chills!), this is well worth a listen. Streaming only AFAIK, but if someone loads it up for download I’ll let you know.

See y’all at Atomic on Saturday night!
